Lacuna (For Fungal Nails)
Fungal nail infection is caused by fungal invasion of the nail structure and is one of the most nail disorders in adults. Damage to the nail can affect its growth, size, shape, and subsequently lead to infection.
Causes
- Dermatophytes
- Non-Dermatophyte Moulds
- Yeasts
- Transferred from person to person or through indirect contact e.g from communal areas where you walk barefoot
- Existing medical conditions
- Trauma to the nail
Symptoms
- Discolouration of the nail.
- Thickening or distortion.
- Pain and discomfort.
How can it be treated?
We offer the lacuna method for treating fungal nails. A series of very small holes are drilled into the affected nails allowing the anti-fungal medication to penetrate through the nail and to the nail bed where the fungal spores are growing. The antifungal treatment is applied on a daily basis until the nail is clear.
To make this option as effective as possible the brittle and loose nail is removed and thickened nails reduced.
