Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
Laser has been used for podiatric treatments in low infrared setting, such as for Arthritis, Tendonitis and Planar Fasciitis. Laser therapy utilises a low powered laser light to optimise the ability of the cells involved in the healing process to respond and therefore aid recovery. This treatment does not cause any thermal or heating disturbance or damage to the body whatsoever and is a completely safe method of treatment.
For well over three decades, its use in modern medicine has been instrumental for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, healing wounds, and treating pain. In podiatric treatments, LLLT has been used to treat tendonitis, post nail surgery to help with healing, phantom and neuropathic pain, healing of chronic wounds, arthritis, fungal nails and verrucae. These lasers are also fundamentally different from lasers used as surgical instruments, as they are not thermal lasers, but photo-biochemical in their action.
LLLT has been used for:
- Pain Relief
- Wound Healing
- Support given to the Immune System
- Reduction in Inflammation
- Soft tissue injuries
- Treatment of fungal nails
- Treatment of plantar warts/verrucae
Why Use LLLT Treatments?
One of the distinct advantages that LLLT offers is to be able to treat chronic wounds and pain syndromes without the need for any discomforting symptoms or adverse effects that the alternative methods have post-treatment. When treating pain and soft tissue, patients respond swiftly to Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), and the results can be evident in just a few treatments. Depending on condition, its severity and the length of time the condition is present the amount of treatment sessions required will vary from person to person.
The LLLT is completely safe. It uses a laser beam with a very low intensity which neither burns nor cuts your skin. However, there are safety measures to be taken, such as wearing laser goggles for protecting the eyes, as well as considerations of caution when using electrotherapy equipment. The clinician handling the equipment will always be fully equipped to ensure that your laser treatment is completely safe, so you don’t ever have to worry about them.
